This project proposes the use of a hydrogen smart battery scaled as a mini grid to store energy for a village in Malawi that decouples supply from demand, uses frugal and affordable technology, and improves quality of life through job creation and more reliable access to energy. While villages with access to solar power in sub-Saharan Africa have energy generally guaranteed throughout the day, it is intermittent. If wanting to store for variable use, lead acid batteries are usually the only affordable option and provide an unreliable, inefficient, and short-term solution. Our design aims to improve upon these shortcomings.
